This January many people are giving their bodies a well-deserved break from booze and taking part in the Dryathlon, which sees them giving up alcohol for a month and donating what they would have spent to Cancer Research UK.
Many charities are using the concept of dedicating a month to doing something special as a unique fundraising tool, such as Movember and Macmillan’s Go Sober for October.
The Dryathlon campaign saw great success last year, seeing 35,000 dryathletes raise more than £4m for the charity. Cancer Research uses innovative techniques to draw in potential donors, giving the campaign a strong element of competition. The website has interactive features such as alcohol and calorie counters and a leader board to see how much money the teams have raised.
