The Nonprofit Weekly Roundup: Secrets, Emails, and Tips for Better Donor Retention in 2014

In honor of the release of the newest npExperts ebook, Show the Love: Thoughtful Engagement to Retain Donors, this roundup all about retention.

And according to findings from the 2014 Nonprofit Communications Trends Report that was released last week, this is right on time. I mean, is it just me or is anyone else a little concerned that donor retention remains a lower priority for nonprofits across the industry?.

What’s the deal?

If we know that donors are dropping off right and left, shouldn’t it be time to do something about it?

We think so. And from the looks of it, so do thought leaders and experts across the industry. Take a look at what they’ve got to say.

  •  Nonprofit Donor Retention is Not as Hard as You Think. Or, at least it shouldn’t be. In Claire Axelrad’s post, she draws upon our for-profit brethren’s ”customer is always right” moto to craft 7 donor centered principles that will make donor retention at your organization a little easier.
  • Tom Belford’s recent Agitator post highlights The Experts on Retention. Wonder what caught his eye? Advice on handwriting and monthly giving. Have a look. Do you agree?
  • New from John Haydon: What Armondo’s Pizza Taught Me About Fundraising. It’s not just that the pizza’s great. It’s that he leaves with a smile, a happy stomach, and a desire to go back again. And again. And again. That’s what happens when you treat your donors well – they keep coming back.
  •  It’s his big npEngage debut and we’re glad to have him. You’ll see why. Marshall Simmonds uses inspiration from Pink Floyd to craft a post on donor engagement. A Message from Your Donors: Wish You Were Here is a reminder of just how important it is to be there for your donors.
  • Mike Snusz ‘s 9 Underutilized Emails that Improve Donor Retention provides examples of how nonprofits can use email to boost donor retention.  When used correctly, email can be a tool to build relationships and establis
  • Bloomerang teamed up with Erik Daubert, contributor to the Fundraising Effectiveness Project’s 2013 survey, and talked retention data. Findings suggest there are gains in giving, but donors are still dropping off.  Listen to the discussion here: [Video] Why the FEP Donor Retention Data is So Vital to Every Fundraiser

And, of course, my favorite retention highlight of all…
