#GivingTuesday 2013 was a huge success! Online giving that day, according to Blackbaud, was up 90% over the previous year. Wow. That’s nothing short of incredible.
What now?
Wait until the Tuesday after Thanksgiving 2014? No way.
“#GivingTuesday, where do we go from here” was the topic of a Google Hangout yesterday, where I was joined by the incredibly knowledgeable Andrew Watt, CEO of AFP International. Together, we talked about the movement, what we learned from it, and what came next. The highlights?
- #GivingTuesday was such a great success because it was for everyone – nonprofits, companies, small businesses, cities, individuals…you name it.
- Nonprofits that were the most successful used the movement to amplify their own messages, weaving #GivingTuesday as an opportunity into their own efforts and stories.
- #GivingTuesday isn’t just about fundraising. Although looking at online dollars raised is a great proxy for success, the real power of the movement becomes clear when you look at how people advocated, served, convened and built communities.

It’s a thoughtful, helpful conversation for those wondering where to go from here as you plan for 2014. Don’t wait for the next #GivingTuesday to make the most of a movement that stands for doing good every day.
